Nobody saw everyone leave the Kuldhara abandoned village or knew where they had gone. However, there are a few theories as to why this happened.

First of all, there may have been a Mughal invasion and poisoning. This would make sense considering that this rich community was oftentimes their target. Whenever the Kuldhara haunted villagers resisted the wells and water sources were poisoned resulting in the death of many animals and thus making it very difficult for the villagers to continue living there. Since then nobody has wanted to return because they were afraid.

Secondly, the Emperor may have wanted to marry the village chief’s beautiful daughter (Paliwal Brahmin). When he refused because they were of different casts the Emperor got mad and imposed heavy taxation upon the village, which didn’t pay up, But the villagers fled. However, they chose to kill the girl before doing so because they didn’t want the Emperor to recognize them and arrest them all for fleeing. It’s believed that they buried her in a hole alive where she died with many unfulfilled desires and so continues roaming around as a Churail (lady ghost) that haunts people who venture into her village, especially at night.
